In the State of the Cryosphere 2024 – Lost Ice, Global Damage report, over 50 leading cryosphere scientists warn of vastly higher impacts and costs to the global economy given accelerating losses in the world’s snow and ice regions. Current climate commitments, leading the world to well over 2°C of warming, would bring disastrous and irreversible consequences for billions of people from global ice loss. Download the report

I coordinatori di diversi network di collaborazione sui processi climatici in Artico e Antartide hanno rilasciato un comunicato stampa che è stato letto al Cryosphere Pavillon della COP29, svoltosi in Azerbaijan. Nel comunicato si ricordano i rischi legati ai cosiddetti tipping point nelle aree polari e si invita a riprendere in mano gli ambiziosi obiettivi di mitigazione dell'Accordo di Parigi. Molti ricercatori CNR sono coinvolti nelle iniziative di queste comunità internazionali di ricerca.

Workshop Aims:
- To explore synergies among different ocean drilling initiatives and ideas targeting the evolution of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets and feedback mechanisms between cryosphere, oceans, and atmosphere.
- To consolidate existing and develop new ideas and proposals to be submitted to IODP³ to optimise any future drilling expeditions in the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans, and their gateways.
- To develop links to other IODP³ themes, such as geohazards, tectonics and deep life.
- To involve ice sheet and climate modellers, who can help focus the scientific objectives towards the ground truthing of future climate change.
- To foster international collaborations among researchers and support Early Career Researchers’ involvement in ocean drilling.

glaciologist with a degree in Atmospheric and Cryospheric Sciences from the University of Innsbruck, where she specialised in the study of the energy balance of cold-based Alpine glaciers. Her main research interest is the evolution of glacial albedo in the accumulation areas of Alpine glaciers, which are progressively turning into ablation areas due to climate change. She worked for the Institute for Interdisciplinary Mountain Research (Austrian Academy of Sciences, ÖAW), developing algorithms for analysing weather station data and participating in the glaciological monitoring of Jamtalferner. Outside of academia, she is vice-president of the Austrian section of Girls* on Ice, where she acted as leader and scientific instructor on the 2024 expedition. She also collaborates with Protect Our Winters Italia, delivering workshops in schools and writing articles for L'Altramontagna.

Dal 29 ottobre al 6 novembre si è svolta la campagna oceanografica EMSO SA-2024 (EuropeanMultidisciplinarySeafloor and water columnObservatory - Southern Adriatic 2024) a bordo della Nave Oceanografica del Cnr Gaia Blu, con partenza e rientro nel porto di Bari. Questa missione ha l’obiettivo di supportare il monitoraggio a lungo termine dei processi oceanici e dei cambiamenti climatici nel Mare Adriatico Meridionale, utilizzando la l’infastruttura di ricerca europea EMSO-ERIC sotto il cui ombrello vengono coordinate una serie di piattaforme osservative sottomarine dotate di sensori per la raccolta continua di dati fisici e bio-geochimici.

La campagna EMSO-SA2024 è coordinata dall'Istituto di Scienze Polari del CNR (CNR-ISP), con il capo missione Stefano Miserocchi, e coinvolge l’Osservatorio Geofisico Sperimentale (OGS), l'Istituto di scienze marine del CNR (CNR-ISMAR) e il British Antarctic Survey (BAS) UK.  Comunicato stampa CNR  -  Gaia Blu, i risultati della campagna EMSO SA

The Copernicus Marine Service is organising a two-day workshop to increase user awareness of the Arctic Ocean marine ecosystem, related issues and conservation techniques specific to this region. The aim of this workshop is to share applications of the Copernicus Marine Service products in ecosystem monitoring studies and to focus on the main marine and regional challenges.

The workshop will cover a number of related topics, ranging from sea ice velocity, rising sea level and changes around the Arctic Ocean linked to the climate change.  Registration

Sta per concludersi la campagna oceanografica PER24 - Pollutants’ Environmental Research a bordo della N/O Gaia Blu nel Mar Adriatico meridionale e nello Stretto di Otranto. La campagna è focalizzata su attività scientifiche multidisciplinari volte a valutare l’entità delle alterazioni indotte dall'uomo sugli ecosistemi bentonici marini. Particolare attenzione è stata rivolta ai contaminanti organici di origine antropica e ai processi di trasporto e trasferimento di queste sostanze dalle aree di piattaforma alle regioni di bacino profondo. La campagna, coordinata dall’CNR-IRBIM, coinvolge diverse Università (Univpm, UniUrb, UniCam), ISPRA e altri istituti CNR tra cui ISP. Approfondimento - Luisa Patrolecco (CNR-ISP)
