Bioaccumulation of antibiotics and resistance genes in lettuce following cattle manure and digestate fertilization and their effects on soil and phyllosphere microbial communities

Graphucal Abstract24 Ottobre 2022

Published on Environmental Pollution a study on the biodegradation of veterinary antibiotics (ABs) sulfonamides and fluoroquinolones present in agricultural soils amended with bovine manure or anaerobic digestate. The bioaccumulation of ABs, the transmission of bacterial resistance genes (ARGs) and the structure of the microbial community in the crops of Lactuca sativa were also evaluated, analyzing the soil, rhizosphere and leaf phyllosphere for 46 days through chemical and microbiological determinations. The overall results show the presence of fluoroquinolones, but not sulfonamides, and ARGs in the leaves of lettuce, and the risk of antibiotics and bacterial resistance genes entering the food chain through the intake of fresh vegetables cannot be excluded.
