SIOS offers a training course on how to effectively use UAVs in Svalbard research.

The goal of the course is to teach participants the basic skills needed to use UAVs in Svalbard.

Un memorandum of understanding è stato siglato tra l'Istituto di Scienze Polari del CNR e l'Istituto Coreano di Ricerca Polare (KOPRI) il 15 novembre 2021. Il 20 febbraio 2023 i due direttori degli Istituti si sono finalmente incontrati al #ASSW2023, formalizzando con una stretta di mano una cooperazione che già da anni vedeva coinvolti i ricercatori di Italia e Corea.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Institute of Polar Sciences CNR-ISP and the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) on the 15th of November 2021. On the 20th of February 2023 the two directors finally met at #ASSW2023 in Vienna, sealing and renewing with a handshake a long established cooperation between Italy and Korea.

Si è appena conclusa l’attività del progetto Lasagne (Laminated sediments in the magnificent Edisto Inlet (Victoria Land): What processes control their deposition and preservation?) coordinato da Leonardo Langone di CNR-ISP in Edisto Inlet (Mare di Ross).
Il mooring MEI è stato recuperato, manutenzionato e rimesso a mare per un altro anno di misure. Nel corso della crociera oceanografica con N/R Laura Bassi sono state inoltre occupati 7 siti della baia dove sono stati effettuati campionamenti di acqua e sedimento superficiale. La baia è stata inoltre coperta da una fitta rete di stazioni CTD integrate con profili di velocità L-ADCP.

La nave ha infine acquisito dati di batimetria multifascio, Topas e vmADCP durante i transiti tra una stazione e l’altra. La campagna è stata un successo per l’enorme mole di dati acquisiti nonostante la nave abbia dovuto continuamente aprirsi un varco nel ghiaccio marino che ancora occupava la baia. La diversità microbica accoppiata a quella geochimica ha rivelato un'unicità di habitat nelle brine endoglaciali del ghiacciao di Boulder Clay in Antartide. Si tratta di crioecosistemi considerati analoghi terrestri di quelli potenzialmente presenti su altri pianeti del nostro sistema solare. Le indagini svolte dal CNR-ISP di Messina (in collaborazione con le Università dell’Insubria capofila, Perugia, Venezia e Bolzano) nell'ambito del Programma Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartide (PNRA) suggeriscono una probabile origine antica delle brine, dovuta principalmente a una progressiva crioconcentrazione di acqua marina. I risultati sono stati recentemente pubblicati su Scientific Reports.
