Strato dopo strato conservano informazioni su clima e ambiente che risalgono a circa 10.000 anni fa, una fonte preziosa di dati a forte rischio di estinzione. Il progetto La Memoria dei Ghiacci racconta il ciclo di vita dei ghiacciai italiani attraverso una app che permette di vedere come sono cambiati, ritirandosi, nel loro ultimo secolo di vita.

Title: Estimate the ice volume of all glaciers in High Mountain Asia with deep learning

He received his master degree in nuclear and particle physics from Milano-Bicocca University in 2014. His background ranges from applied particle physics to environmental radioactivity and high-energy physics. His work at the nuclear fission reactor in Pavia (Italy) introduced him to the ice core science field. He did his PhD (2014-2017) at the Niels Bohr Institute (Copenhagen, Denmark), working on ice core continuous flow analysis systems and past sea ice reconstructions. He continued his research on climate reconstructions at the Niels Bohr Institute, at the Italian National Research Council and at the University of Venice in 2018 and 2019. Between 2020 and 2022 he was Marie Curie fellow at the University of Venice with a project on computer vision and Artificial Intelligence techniques applied to ice core analyses. Since September 2022 he works on glacier modeling via deep neural networks in collaboration with the University of California, Irvine. He is particularly interested in exploring AI and Machine Learning approaches to Earth System Science problems.

A special issue of Remote Sensing (ISSN 2072-4292). This special issue belongs to the section Biogeosciences Remote Sensing.

The scope of this Special Issue is to collect research articles focused on, but not limited to, applications of remote-sensing data/techniques combined with other approaches to better monitor and/or understand processes occurring on snow-covered and glaciated areas, in different environmental frameworks. Manuscripts using novel approaches based on data integration and on multimission products are particularly welcome.

I cambiamenti climatici rappresentano oggi una sfida cruciale per il futuro della Terra e l’Artico è la regione del pianeta in cui si manifestano più rapidamente. Attraverso installazioni fisiche e multimediali, esperimenti interattivi e immagini suggestive, il pubblico è guidato alla scoperta dell’Artico e delle sue peculiarità: l’aurora boreale, il sole di mezzanotte, il “buco” dell’ozono. La mostra presenta inoltre le principali attività che i ricercatori italiani conducono in Artico e come queste si integrano nel sistema della ricerca internazionale per lo studio dei cambiamenti climatici.

The meeting will be held at the Swiss Federal Institute WSL in Birmensdorf, near Zurich.

At its 26th edition, the Alpine Glaciology Meeting is an annual, community-building gathering addressing researchers that are active in the field of glaciology.

The next Workshop on the dynamics and mass budget of Arctic glaciers and IASC Network on Arctic Glaciology annual meeting will be held at the University Center in Obergurgl, Austria, on 26-28 January 2023.

The workshop will include a special cross-cutting session on Glacier-atmosphere interactions in a warming and wetting Arctic, which aims to provide an inter-disciplinary forum that brings together glaciologists and atmospheric scientists.

IASC is now accepting proposals for consideration for IASC funding in 2023 until 18 December 2022 at 23:59 GMT.
The funding is provided by the five IASC Working Groups (WGs) (Atmosphere, Cryosphere, Marine, Social & Human, Terrestrial) and aimed at encourageing and supporting science-led international programmes by offering opportunities for planning and coordination, and by facilitating communication and access to facilities.

Proposals can be submitted for Cross-cutting Projects (relevant for two or more IASC Working Groups); or WG-specific Projects (relevant for only one IASC Working Group)

The Plastic-AG is currently collating data for an open access repository summarising national and international projects focused on plastic pollution in the Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic regions.

This repository file, along with a user-friendly map displaying project locations will be freely available on the SCAR Plastic-AG web page.
