Chemical, biogeochemical, and physical drivers of the coupled polar atmosphere and climate: an International Polar Year 2032-33 planning workshop” (Hybrid)

November 17-22, 2024, Centre Paul Langevin, Aussois, Alps/ France

The international initiatives CATCH, PACES, BEPSII, ASPeCt and QUiesCENT will hold a joint workshop bringing together scientists and stakeholders with an interest in atmosphere-ice-ocean research focussing on chemical, biogeochemical and physical processes in the Arctic and Antarctic and links to climate change. Cold regions which are seasonally or permanently covered by snow and ice, notably the Third Pole, are also of interest.

Arctic Science Summit Week 2025 | 20-28 March 2025 | Boulder, Colorado USA

The theme of ASSW 2025 is Arctic Research Planning for the Next Decade as it will include the Fourth International Conference on Arctic Research Planning (ICARP IV) Summit, providing a unique opportunity for participants to contribute toward planning the next decade of Arctic research. The ICARP IV Summit will engage Arctic researchers, Indigenous Peoples, policymakers, and other interested parties from around the world, serving as a crucial milestone for shaping the Fifth International Polar Year in 2032–33.

The 15th Symposium on Polar Science, 3-5 December 2024, Tokyo

The 15th Symposium on Polar Science hosted by the National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR), Tokyo, Japan, will be held from 3 to 5 December 2024. The NIPR is organizing this annual symposium to present and promote a wide variety of polar scientific research and interdisciplinary studies. The symposium will include both oral and poster sessions. Oral sessions will be conducted in a hybrid format, allowing in-person and online participation. Poster sessions will be held exclusively on-site at the symposium venue. The official language of the symposium is English.

Workshop: Developing a Framework for Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) in Terrestrial Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic Ecosystems

Dates: September 18-20, 2024
Location: Scott Polar research Institute, Cambridge United Kingdom (with online participation options available)

The workshop will be focused on developing a standardised framework for calculating Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) for terrestrial Antarctic and sub-Antarctic ecosystems. This workshop will be held from September 18 (lunchtime) -20 (lunchtime), 2024, with both in-person and online participation options available.

13th Advanced Training Course on Land Remote Sensing 16-20 September 2024 Innsbruk, Austria

The European Space Agency (ESA) is organising an Advanced Training Course on Land Remote Sensing with the focus on Snow and Glaciers in collaboration with the University of Innsbruck. 

The Advanced Training Course on Land Remote Sensing for Snow and Glaciers aims at: 1) training the next generation of scientists and professionals in remote sensing of snow and glaciers; 2) explaining the theoretical principles, processing algorithms and data products from multiple sources including optical, thermal and microwave; 3) stimulating the use of EO in the domains of water cycle science, water management and hazards e.g. floods.

2024 Arctic Circle Assembly 17-19 October 2024

The Arctic Circle Assembly will be held in the Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre, Reykjavík, Iceland, on October 17 - 19.

1st International Workshop on Biodiversity in Svalbard Archipelago: state of the art and perspectives

Funded by SIOS and hosted by the Institute of Polar Sciences (CNR-ISP), Messina (Italy), the 1st International Workshop on Biodiversity in Svalbard Archipelago aims at being a multidisciplinary arena where to discuss the state of the art and the gaps in the knowledge on Arctic biodiversity, and the way for future development in the studies of this vulnerable polar environment.

ESA Training Course on Arctic Methane and Permafrost 9-24 September 2024 - UNIS, Svalbard, Norway

The European Space Agency (ESA) is organising an Earth Observation (EO) training course in collaboration with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System, SIOS. The course will be held for researchers, students, PhD students and young professionals who use EO technology within their research or work and want to improve their knowledge of remote sensing. In total 24 students can attend the summer school.

Cryo2Ice Symposium - 23-27 September 2024 - Reykjavik, Iceland

The Cryo2Ice Symposium focuses on work that makes use of CryoSat-2 or ICESat-2 or a combination of both satellites. 

Missions Status: including CryoSat-2 and ICESat-2 satellite systems, sensors, and data operations, calibration and validation. Sea Ice: including lead detection, snow loading, sea ice freeboard, roughness, thickness, dynamics and thermodynamics. Ice Sheets and Ice Shelves: including long-term, seasonal, and episodic changes in ice sheet, ice shelf, and iceberg elevation, thickness, and mass, ice sheet grounding line migration, and iceberg calving, and subglacial lakes and hydrology. Mountain Glaciers and Ice Caps: including long-term, seasonal, and episodic changes in elevation, thickness, and mass. Oceans and hydrology: including polar and coastal oceans, regional and global sea level rise, marine gravity, and land hydrology. Synergies and follow-on missions: including planned and future missions that build on the heritage of polar altimetry.
