Abstract
Light absorbing particles in snow and ice lead to snow darkening, and can accelerate snow and ice melt. Numerous studies have investigated black carbon in snow and ice cores from Svalbard, but less work has been done on dust. In this talk recent results of dust concentrations in Svalbard snow and ice are presented, and implications for variations in dust deposition over time are explored.

Ritrovate tracce di creme solari al Polo Nord, sui ghiacciai dell’arcipelago delle Svalbard. Si depositano soprattutto in inverno, quando sull’Artico cala la notte. A misurarne la concentrazione e spiegarne l’origine è uno studio condotto da ricercatrici e ricercatori dell’Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia e dell’Istituto di scienze polari del Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche (CNR-ISP), in collaborazione con l’Università delle Svalbard. I risultati sono pubblicati sulla rivista scientifica Science of the Total Environment.

SIOS offers a training course on how to effectively use hyperspectral remote sensing data acquired from satellites, from airborne campaigns and from the ground, and their associated tools and software in the context of research in Svalbard. General course information

This autumn, SIOS will offer a training course on how to effectively use remote sensing data acquired from satellites, from the air or from the ground, and their associated tools and software in the context of terrestrial research in Svalbard. The course is intended for field scientists, Ph.D. students and technicians with no or little experience with remote sensing techniques. The training will be delivered by remote sensing experts from SIOS member institutions, international teachers and potential virtual talks from ESA experts.

Visione strategica, multidisciplinarità e interdisciplinarità indirizzate alla ricerca in ambienti estremi: queste le parole che guidano da tre anni l’Istituto di Scienze Polari, la sua missione e i suoi ricercatori. Quattro sedi principali sul territorio italiano, che raccolgono ricercatori e ricercatrici provenienti da ambiti di ricerca diversi.
Intensa attività di ricerca nelle regioni polari in Artico a Ny-Ålesund (Isole Svalbard) e in Antartide a Mario Zucchelli e Concordia. Collaborazioni con università, istituzioni, centri di ricerca, nazionali ed internazionali legami che rendono più forte e attivo l’Istituto. Cooperazione internazionale, che vede la presenza dei ricercatori dell’istituto in diversi organismi e tavoli di discussioni in importanti ambiti che si occupano di ricerca polare.
Per festeggiare questo compleanno di ISP, un ringraziamento va a tutte le ricercatrici e ricercatori, che nelle diverse forme contrattuali contribuiscono quotidianamente allo sviluppo delle conoscenza in ambito polare. Un prezioso ringraziamento va al personale amministrativo e tecnico che quotidianamente rende possibile con serietà, impegno e abnegazione lo svolgimento delle attività dell’Istituto costituendo un punto di riferimento per tutta la comunità.
Intervento nell'evento "Oltre 30 anni di sfide" proposto tra i pre-eventi del progetto europeo NET 2021 (ScieNcE Together), coordinato dal Cnr e finanziato dalla Commissione Europea nel programma H2020-MSCA-NIGHT-2020bis G.A. 101036127. L'iniziativa, è stata proposta da Cnr e PNRA in collaborazione con l'evento "Un pozzo di scienza", all'interno del progetto didattico "La Grande Macchina del Mondo" del Gruppo Hera, ed ha coinvolto 1400 ragazzi.
