Published in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety a study that analyzes the effect on the behavior of the earthworm E. foetida exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of organic contaminants in the soil. In particular, the pesticides Chlorpyrifos, Imidacloprid and the anionic surfactant Sodium lauryl ether sulfate were considered, both as single compounds and in mixtures with different combinations (binary, ternary). The application of the mathematical equation of the Combination Index (CI), made it possible for the first time to evaluate the combined effect of these pollutants on the ability of the earthworm to "avoid" the contaminated soil, distinguishing their synergistic, antagonistic or additive role. The results show how the ecotoxicological test based on a behavioral end-point can represent a valid tool for detecting early signs of a possible environmental risk in the presence of a multiple contamination.

The SSC2021 will be held at Scandic Fornebu, Oslo 2-3 November 2021.

The conference aspire to enhance cooperation and quality within Svalbard research, build and strengthen interdisciplinary and international networks and consolidate Svalbard as an attractive platform for Arctic research.

The Svalbard Strategic Grant is a seed money program aimed at advancing coordination, collaboration and data sharing between researchers with a relevance to Svalbard.
The program is financed by the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and administered by the Svalbard Science Forum (SSF) secretariat in Longyearbyen.
A call for proposals is made annually. The application deadline is the 16 December 2019.

The full call text is available here.

Funding for Coordination and Networking/Support Activities in Svalbard (Svalbard Strategic Grant)

Svalbard Strategic Grant supports activities which increase cooperation between research localities in Svalbard, further put Svalbard research into a larger pan-Arctic perspective and projects that aim to stimulate sustainable cooperation with Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System (SIOS).

Application deadline : Open-ended

The 15th Symposium on Polar Science hosted by the National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR), Tokyo, Japan, will be held from 3 to 5 December 2024. The NIPR is organizing this annual symposium to present and promote a wide variety of polar scientific research and interdisciplinary studies. The symposium will include both oral and poster sessions. Oral sessions will be conducted in a hybrid format, allowing in-person and online participation. Poster sessions will be held exclusively on-site at the symposium venue. The official language of the symposium is English.
