May the Data be with you: unlocking polar mysteries with Large Language Models (LLMs)

Abstract: This presentation explores the power of Large Language Models (LLMs) in polar research, highlighting their ability to process vast amounts of unstructured data and extract meaningful insights. At the core of these models is the transformer architecture, which enables efficient contextual understanding, sequence processing, and knowledge synthesis across diverse datasets. A key focus will be the development of a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) application designed for a polar research repository. May the data be with you as we embark on this journey to unlock the mysteries of Earth’s poles!

Workshop Aims:
- To explore synergies among different ocean drilling initiatives and ideas targeting the evolution of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets and feedback mechanisms between cryosphere, oceans, and atmosphere.
- To consolidate existing and develop new ideas and proposals to be submitted to IODP3 to optimise any future drilling expeditions in the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans, and their gateways.
- To develop links to other IODP3 themes, such as geohazards, tectonics and deep life.
- To involve ice sheet and climate modellers, who can help focus the scientific objectives towards the ground truthing of future climate change.
- To foster international collaborations among researchers and support Early Career Researchers’ involvement in ocean drilling.

The Copernicus Marine Service is organising a two-day workshop to increase user awareness of the Arctic Ocean marine ecosystem, related issues and conservation techniques specific to this region. The aim of this workshop is to share applications of the Copernicus Marine Service products in ecosystem monitoring studies and to focus on the main marine and regional challenges.
The workshop will cover a number of related topics, ranging from sea ice velocity, rising sea level and changes around the Arctic Ocean linked to the climate change. Registration
Il workshop internazionale si è svolto a Messina il 10 e 11 ottobre. Lo stato dell'arte dell'inquinamento da microplastiche è stato discusso da esperti del settore per identificare lacune di conoscenza rilevanti e sfide per future raccomandazioni volte ad affrontare l'inquinamento da plastica nelle acque dolci dell'Artico (ad esempio neve, ghiacciai, laghi, fiumi e biota), insieme a un focus sulla plastisfera come nuovo habitat microbico. Il workshop ha coinvolto circa 35 scienziati, tra cui ricercatori all'inizio della carriera. Il brainstorming tra i partecipanti e la successiva sessione di scrittura sono stati finalizzati a riassumere i risultati del workshop da condividere con ICARP IV (International Conference on Arctic Research Planning) per l'implementazione. Il workshop è stato approvato dall'International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) e ha ricevuto finanziamenti dal Programma di Ricerche in Artico (PRA). Gli organizzatori ringraziano la Fondazione Messina che ha ospitato il workshop presso il Parco Horcynus Orca a Capo Peloro.
