Un gruppo di ricerca internazionale coordinato dall’austriaco ISTA e coadiuvato da Cnr-Isp e Cnr-Irsa ha sviluppato un modello previsionale sulla capacità refrigerante dei ghiacciai, terminata la quale cesseranno di mitigare gli effetti del cambiamento climatico e accelereranno la loro fusione. I risultati della ricerca, realizzata utilizzando i dati di 350 stazioni su scala globale, sono stati pubblicati su Nature Climate Change. - COMUNICATO STAMPA CNR

Sul sito dell'ufficio Previsioni del Servizio prevenzione rischi e Centrale Unica di Emergenza, è stato pubblicato il nuovo bilancio di massa geodetico completo di tutti i ghiacciai del Trentino.
Il bilancio di massa a cura dell’Università di Padova e Istituto di Scienze Polari è stato elaborato sulla base dei rilievi ortofotogrammetrici forniti dalla protezione civile della PAT e analizza le variazioni di massa raffrontando i modelli DTM nel periodo 2015-2022. Il lavoro rappresenta la naturale continuazione di un analogo studio già pubblicato “Analisi multi temporale delle variazioni glaciali”, elaborato raffrontando i modelli DTM precedenti del 2003 e del 2015.

Si è appena conclusa a Reykjavík in Islanda l’edizione 2025 dell’Arctic Circle Assembly, la più importante rete internazionale dedicata all’Artico che ogni anno riunisce governi, istituzioni di ricerca, ONG, associazioni e imprese per discutere il futuro di una delle regioni più fragili e strategiche del mondo.
Oltre 2.000 partecipanti - tra cui scienziati, rappresentanti di governi, decisori politici, rappresentanti di associazioni - provenienti da oltre 60 Paesi si sono confrontati su temi cruciali come i cambiamenti climatici, la sicurezza artica, la diplomazia scientifica e lo sviluppo sostenibile.
L’Italia ha partecipato con un ruolo di primo piano con diverse istituzioni quali il Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche che, attraverso l’Istituto di scienze polari (Cnr-Isp), ha organizzato il panel Changing Arctic systems: scientific insights and sustainable solutions. “All’Arctic Circle Assembly ho portato la voce della ricerca italiana e in particolare della comunità scientifica del Cnr che da anni studia l’Artico e la criosfera come sistemi globali interconnessi”, ha detto Giuliana Panieri, direttrice del Cnr-Isp. “Il nostro impegno è comprendere i cambiamenti e tradurre la ricerca in azione per la sostenibilità del pianeta”. - NOTA STAMPA CNR
LIQUIDICE Seeks Postdoctoral Researcher on green transition, melting glaciers and climate adaptation in Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland)
The LIQUIDICE project is delighted to announce a new opportunity for an ambitious postdoctoral researcher to join our international consortium in exploring climate change adaptation in Greenland. The position is now open at the University of Copenhagen, to be filled by 1 February 2026 (or as soon as possible thereafter).
About the Role & Project: This 22-month postdoctoral role is embedded within Work Package 4: Impact of Change in Water Resources from the Cryosphere to Society, under the umbrella of the Horizon Europe project LIQUIDICE. Operational from February 2025 through January 2029, LIQUIDICE brings together partner institutions across Europe and beyond to study changing ice, snow, and permafrost, and their social and hydrological impacts. The successful candidate will be part of the Greenlandic and Arctic Studies (GAS) group within the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies (ToRS), Faculty of Humanities, UCPH. This interdisciplinary environment spans Arctic anthropology, Inuit studies, cultural studies, and environmental sciences.

Looking Ahead to 2032–33: ISP Launches an IPY-5 Working Group for the 5th International Polar Year
Our Institute has established a new Working Group dedicated to preparing for the 5th International Polar Year (IPY), which will take place in 2032–33.
Since its first edition in 1882, the International Polar Year has represented an extraordinary opportunity for international scientific cooperation, aimed at advancing knowledge of the polar regions, their environment, and their crucial role in the global climate system.
In anticipation of this milestone event, our Institute – together with many other institutions and countries – is preparing a series of initiatives, including research activities, outreach programs, representation, and international collaborations.
The newly established Working Group will coordinate and promote these efforts, guiding both the scientific community and the public towards the celebration of the 5th International Polar Year.

In occasione della Giornata Mondiale degli Oceani (8 giugno 2025) e in vista della Terza Conferenza delle Nazioni Unite sugli Oceani (UNOC3), che si terrà a Nizza dal 9 al 13 giugno, il Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) celebra il proprio impegno per la tutela degli ecosistemi marini con un’importante novità: una nuova boa costiera sarà posizionata presso la stazione artica di Ny-Ålesund, alle Isole Svalbard, nell’ambito del progetto PNRR–ITINERIS.
La missione scientifica alle Svalbard è condotta dai ricercatori del CNR-ISP di Bologna e Messina, impegnati anche nella manutenzione dei quattro ancoraggi oceanografici già operativi nella zona (MDI, KIM, MAP e S1, quest’ultimo in collaborazione con OGS).
Tra i protagonisti della spedizione artica: Giorgio Bruzzone, Federico Giglio, Gianmarco Ingrosso, Stefano Miserocchi, Angelo Odetti e Francesco Paladini de Mendoza, esperti in oceanografia, chimica marina e monitoraggio ambientale.
Si tratta di un passo strategico per il potenziamento delle capacità di osservazione dell’oceano Artico, una delle aree più sensibili ai cambiamenti climatici globali. La boa contribuirà a monitorare in tempo reale dati ambientali fondamentali, rafforzando la rete osservativa italiana parte del sistema SIOS (Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System) e dell’IT-IOOS (Italian Integrated Ocean Observing System). Questo intervento permetterà di migliorare l’analisi dei fenomeni di "atlantificazione", ovvero la crescente influenza delle acque atlantiche sulle condizioni fisiche e biologiche dell’Artico.
L’iniziativa si inserisce nel più ampio contesto dell’UNOC3, evento internazionale chiave per il raggiungimento dell’Obiettivo di Sviluppo Sostenibile 14 (SDG14), dedicato alla conservazione e uso sostenibile degli oceani e delle risorse marine. Il CNR partecipa con la nave da ricerca italiana Gaia Blu e una folta delegazione scientifica, confermando la leadership italiana nella ricerca oceanografica.

Nella giornata di ieri martedì 13 maggio è ufficialmente iniziata la campagna di carotaggio sul Gran Combin nell’ambito del Progetto ICE MEMORY. I ricercatori di ISP-CNR Venezia (Fabrizio De Blasi, Giulio Cozzi) insieme a colleghi dell’Università Ca’ Foscari (Agnese Petteni, Stefano Frassati e Daniele Zannoni) e della Fondazione Ca’Foscari (Federico Dalla Vecchia) sono arrivati in località Valpelline (AO) dove, grazie alla collaborazione dell’amministrazione comunale locale, hanno sistemato parte del materiale e strumentazione scientifica nei magazzini della Protezione Civile. Il comune di Ollomont (AO), poco lontano, ha messo a disposizione dei locali per Il pernottamento e dove la squadra ha stabilito il “campo base”. Nella giornata di mercoledì 14 maggio si è unito al gruppo anche Victor Zagorodnov ingegnere della Cryosphere Research System (CRS, USA), che collabora da anni con ISP. Il gruppo ha assemblato i sistemi di carotaggio per effettuare di test di funzionamento.

First Pilot Call of INTERACT Association for Access taking place in 2026 is open until 13th June 2025, 16:00 CEST.
INTERACT Association aims to support the next generation of scientists by creating opportunities to conduct research and fieldwork at research stations. Therefore, the first pilot Access call of INTERACT Association is dedicated to support Early-Career Researchers, defined as “Undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate level up to 5 years active in science after the latest degree”.
INTERACT Association supports terrestrial research in Arctic, Boreal and Alpine regions. Access is only granted to user groups to conduct research, not for arranging or attending courses, conferences, seminars or workshops. Proposals should be focused on the terrestrial environment; any other kind of research (e.g. marine or atmospheric) should demonstrate strong linkages to the terrestrial realm in order to be granted. Deadline of the call: 13th June 2025 at 16:00 CEST (UTC+1). INTERACT TAP will close automatically after the deadline.
